Uttarakhand, a northern Indian state bordered by the Himalayas and famous for its Hindu holy sites, is a popular tourist destination. The Beatles’ 1968 visit to Rishikesh, a significant center for yoga studies, helped to popularise the city. The evening Ganges Aarti, a religious gathering on the banks of the sacred Ganges River, is held in the city. Bengal tigers and other local species can be found in the state’s forests Jim Corbett National Park, which is home to the state’s largest national park.
Beautiful things are inherent in almost everything that Uttarakhand represents – the majestic Himalayas, the holiest of rivers, spiritual mystery, breathtaking landscapes, the incessantly colorful play of environment, enticing history carved in antiquity stones, enthralling floral and faunal diversity, and the most simple of people. According to ancient Hindu legends, the grandeur of the Himalayas, which are instinctively thought to be the sanctified dwelling places of Gods, has always been afforded the utmost reverence possible by the divine. This ‘Land of the Gods’ is the starting point for a great deal of Hindu mythology.
