Central Reserve Police Force or CRPF is a paramilitary force under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. The primary function of CRPF is to assist the police force in states and union territories in maintaining law and order and counterinsurgency operations. CRPF was founded in the year 1939 by the British government as Crown Representative’s Police but after independence, it became CRPF by an act of Parliament in 1949.
CRPF has played a major role in many important operations, such as neutralizing the terrorists in the 2001 Parliament attack, countering the terrorists who attacked the Ram Janmabhoomi Complex in 2005, and more. CRPF has been actively involved in counterinsurgency operations against the Maoists, with its special COBRA wing spearheading the operations against left-wing insurgency. J&K has also been a major theatre of operations for the force. CRPF also assists the Border Security Force in checking infiltrations and trans-border crimes along the border with Pakistan.
CRPF is composed of 247 battalions with about 1200 personnel in each. Till date, it has received a total of 1586 gallantry awards.
