The period from 1901- 1921 is considered as the period of stationary growth of population in India. Moreover, the negative growth rate was recorded between 1911-1921. The main cause of the overpopulation was the high birth date and death rate. In recent years, the birth rate is higher than the death rate. Some other causes are poor medical services, illiteracy, and unemployment.
Steady population growth had achieved in 1921. There was an improvement in health, medical system, transport, communication etc. However, the birth rate was high in that period. The period between 1951 to 1981 is considered as the period of population explosion. During this period, technology paved the way for better living condition and scientific developments. Meanwhile, the birthrate was high compared to the previous phase. Since 1981, the growth rate has started slowing down. Early marriage, illiteracy is increased. Hence, the birth rate is slightly higher than the death rate, which is why India is the second most populous country after China.
